Ben Shalom drops promising Liam Smith Anfield update as Boxxer chief set for more Liverpool talks

BOXXER chief Ben Shalom has revealed he is working on securing Liam Smith a dream night at Anfield at the end of May.

Smith knocked Chris Eubank Jr down twice in quick succession in the fourth round before the referee waved off the middleweight contest in Manchester last month. Smith, who could face Eubank again in a rematch in the summer, has made no secret of his desire to fight at the home of Liverpool FC.

Two-time unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is another name who has been mentioned as a possible opponent for the 34-year-old It was revealed last month that Liverpool are unable to host events this summer due to work on the club’s new Anfield Road stand.

However, Shalom has now revealed that work is underway for Smith to fight at Anfield the night before the Premier League season concludes in May.

He said: “I think we will have a chance at the end of May and it is going to have to be on that last Premier League weekend to stand any chance before work starts.

“We are working on it all the time. Of course we don’t know yet whether it will be Golovkin, or whether it will be Eubank, we don’t know. Anfield is a dream for Liam Smith. I think he has got the pulling power to fill that stadium twice over.

“That Manchester Arena there was more people in it than there has ever been. I think we could have sold five or 10,000 thousand more tickets just on the night.

“It would be enormous and it would be amazing for the city of Liverpool and for Liverpool fans in general, who have had a tough season.

“I think this is the perfect way for boxing to come to Anfield. It might not happen again and we are going to put as much pressure as we can and hopefully at the end of May we might be able to make that dream a reality.”

Reacting to Smith’s win over Eubank last month, Shalom told the ECHO: “To be working with this guy, and for him to f*****g perform like that is special.

“For me, I have done Khan-Brook, Shields-Marshall, Taylor-Catterall, but for me that was the best night of my career because I saw an upset from a guy we invested in. A guy we promised we would deliver this fight and he has done it.

"It is a special, special night. I’m a Liverpool fan as well. Adam Azim is a Liverpool fan as well, who is our biggest star, Natasha Jonas, three-time world champion, wants to fight at Anfield.”
