Tennessee pitcher Ben Joyce has basically shattered the NCAA velocity record books this season with a fastball that was clocked at 105.5 mph. He’s led top-ranked Tennessee with a 2.08 ERA and has posted a ridiculous 15.6 strikeouts per nine innings. He’s very good.
And when you have to account for a low-80s breaking ball to go with that 105.5 mph fastball, it’s pretty easy to see why college hitters are having so much trouble with Joyce. It’s almost an unhittable combo.
Just look at what happened to Ben Anderson and Connor Tate during Tennessee’s game against Georgia on Saturday. Let’s just say that they were a bit ahead of that breaking ball at 82 mph.

It’s never a good sign when you finish your swing before the catcher even catches the ball. But that was exactly what happened to Anderson. Despite Georgia’s win on Saturday, baseball fans continued to be in awe of Joyce.
