Ben Johnson was a man in high demand early this offseason. The bright young Lions offensive coordinator was projected as a leading candidate to seize one of the head coach openings around the league,
A funny thing happened on the way to head coaching glory. Johnson turned it all down to stay where he’s at in Detroit.
Johnson declined an in-person interview with the Carolina Panthers and withdrew his name from consideration for other jobs he was a candidate to land, notably in Indianapolis and Houston.
Johnson explained why in a great conversation with Tim Twentyman of the Lions. From the Twentyman in the Huddle podcast, here’s what Johnson had to say about why he opted to stay in Detroit instead of pursuing higher positions elsewhere.
“It starts with this place and these people,” Johnson said.
“You know what, there are so many things going on here, so many good people, coaches, players. I love the offensive staff, everyone we have on board there. I love the players. I love coming in to work everyday. Coach Campbell is incredible. So, end of the day, talking with my family, it just made sense. It made sense, don’t ruin a good thing.”
