Ben Foster makes decision on Wrexham future as Ryan Reynolds gets his wish

Ben Foster has signed a new one-year deal with Wrexham.

The 40-year-old has agreed to extend his playing career by another year after he sensationally came out of retirement to help the North Wales club win the National League last season.

Foster played a crucial role in Wrexham's record-breaking league victory, saving a last-minute penalty in the title showdown with Notts County and playing a vital role in their goalless draw away at Barnet.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper cemented his place in Wrexham folklore with three clean sheets in his eight appearances after signing a short-term deal, but now faces an altogether different challenge of competing across a 46-match League Two campaign.

Wrexham co-chairman Ryan Reynolds made it clear he wanted Foster to continue playing for another season, and he got his wish with the contract extension.

“At the end of last season it was obvious that I enjoyed being at the club, I loved being part of the team and everything that Wrexham stands for," Foster said.

“The fans took to me so warmly, Phil Parkinson is brilliant, Steve Parkin is top class, I love Aidan Davison to bits, and the co-chairmen are out of this world.

“I’d decided before the end of last season I wanted to do it, because it feels like home. I’ve never joined a football club and felt at ease so quickly.”

Wrexham will be looking for back-to-back promotions following their return to the Football League, and manager Parkinson is delighted to have Foster onboard for another campaign.

He added: "We’re delighted that Ben has signed for the coming season.

“It’s a key signing for us because we all saw the impact he had not just on the pitch but also around the training ground, and we are all looking forward to working with him again next season.”

Foster looks set for a reunion with former side United when the two sides meet in pre-season this summer. Wrexham kickstart their US tour with a clash against Chelsea, before facing LA Galaxy II and a United academy side.
