Ben Doak making 'rapid' Liverpool progress as former Celtic kid's two key traits send him into Jurgen Klopp's mind

Ben Doak has been praised by former Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing and hopes the Scot can reach the top of the game after a number of positive performances.

Spearing, who is now the under-18s coach at Liverpool, has been pleased with the teenagers development since he moved from Celtic last March. The Hoops netted around £600,000 in training fees for the youngster, who has been tipped for the very top after some stunning displays for the Merseyside club’s youth teams, especially in the UEFA Youth League. The winger made his Premier League debut at the end of last year in a 3-1 win over Aston Villa.

He has made a number of appearances for Jurgen Klopp's side since making the move and joined the Anfield outfit on their winter training camp in Dubai during the World Cup break. Doak made his senior debut just days after signing his first professional contract in November, having turned out for the Hoops senior squad last January. He then came off the bench in a Carabao Cup win at home over Derby, becoming the sixth youngest player to play a first team game for the Merseyside club.

Now, his youth coach is saying he can "keep getting better." Spearing told the Liverpool website: "At the end of the day, our main job is to develop players so they can eventually challenge for a place in the first team. So, we are going in the right direction with the likes of Stefan Bajcetic and Ben Doak doing so well up there.

"Ben was in our team at the start of the season and he was absolutely flying. He has made rapid progress and he is a great kid. We want to get players moving up the ladder and Ben has done that, playing for the U21s and then getting his first-team opportunity.

"Ben has got his head down, he works so hard, and he has got a great mentality. That drive and desire the boy has, it’s no surprise to us he has done so well. Fingers crossed, he can keep it going and keep getting better because the lad has a lot of ability."
