Ben Davies Rangers transfer fee breakdown revealed as Liverpool green light Ibrox talks

Rangers have had a £4m bid for Ben Davies accepted by Liverpool as Gio van Bronckhorst moves quickly to replace Ajax-bound Calvin Bassey.

Bassey was is putting the finishing touches to his record-breaking £20m-plus move to the Amsterdam giants after agreeing a four-year deal with the option of a further 12 months. Now Davies is expected to undergo a medical this week ahead of becoming Rangers’ seventh summer signing as a straight replacement for the Nigeria international.

Rangers are set to bank just under £19m up front for Bassey with a further £4m in add-ons and have secured a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of the deal. And a portion of that will be spent on Davies who spent last season on loan at Sheffield United making 23 appearances. A £4m fee - with £3m up front - has been agreed between the clubs and Davies will head north to talk personal terms in the coming days.

The 26-year-old left sided centre half signed for Liverpool from Preston on deadline day of the January transfer window in 2021 after the Anfield club lost Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to injury. But the 6ft 1in stopper, who was linked with Celtic last summer, never made a single top team appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Now he wants to move on in search of regular top team football. Blackburn Rovers made an offer while Championship rivals Burnley and Stoke City had inquired about a loan move.

But Rangers look to have won the race for Davies who has been on van Bronckhorst’s list of potential replacements for Bassey for some time. In eight years with Preston Davies featured 145 times scoring twice. He has also had loan spells with Fleetwood, Newport, Southport, Tranmere and York in that time.
