Ben Davies and Cristian Romero performance suggests surprise Antonio Conte tactic is working

Ben Davies and Cristian Romero are among the top five centre-backs for progressive passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season, according to the latest data.

The Spurs duo have been crucial to Tottenham's early season form as they've helped their team secure 23 points from 30 so far, losing just one game in the process to north London rivals and league leaders, Arsenal.

That being said, Spurs have come under some criticism for not playing an attacking style of football under Antonio Conte, despite the fact that his tactics have been getting results. Supporters may be surprised to learn then that two of their centre-back options are amongst the top five progressive passers in their position so far this campaign.

As per data from FBref, as seen on Twitter, only Chelsea's Kalidou Koulibaly, Liverpool's Joe Gomez and Leicester's Daniel Amartey have a higher average number of progressive passes per 90 than Davies (4.35) and Romero (4.29).

That's no coincidence, either. Although it often looks as though Conte is attempting to catch several teams on the counter-attack, he's clearly instructed his defenders to be confident on the ball. Davies has been a left-back for most of his career so perhaps playing out from the back comes more naturally to him but Romero is somewhat known for his rough-tackling, gritty style as oppose to being a natural ball player.

Conte will be hoping the two continue in the same vein moving forward as their contributions are clearly helping this impressive Spurs outfit.

Tottenham travel to Old Trafford on Wednesday night to face Manchester United. A point will be enough to take them to second in the table as they'll climb above reigning champions, Manchester City.
