Beloved northside cafe to close its doors after 30 years serving local community

Monk's Green, a beloved cafe in Phibsborough, has announced that it will cease trading after closing time on Wednesday, September 28.

The beloved cafe used to be known as Woodstock and has been serving locals for over 30 years. Monk's Green is co-owned by Michelle Moloughney, Liam Moloughney and Angela Ruttledge who also run Olive's Room in St Anne's Park in Clontarf.

A sign posted on the door of Monk's Green announced the closure and thanked Phibsborough locals for their loyalty over the decades. Cafe bosses wrote: "Thank you for your many years of loyal custom. We've had both fun and crazy times.

"Thanks to our incredible team over the years, we've learnt so much from working with you. After 30 years in Phibsborough, first as Woodstock then as Monk's Green, we will really miss you!"

Fellow Phibsborough cafe Bang Bang shared their love for Monk's Green, saying that they are "gutted".

"The very first coffee shop in Phibsboro," they wrote. "We didn't follow until 2016 being second 24 years later."

"Please stop by there tomorrow and say thank you and have some lunch," they added.

Phizzfest, an annual festival celebrating the Phibsborough neighbourhood, shared its condolences for the Monk's Green team and expressed their thanks to Angela, who was a board member for the festival. They wrote on Facebook: "We are so saddened to hear that Monck’s Green / Woodstock who have been at the heart of our community for the past 29 years are closing for good tomorrow.

"Angela was a valued member of the Board of Phizzfest and our good friend. Monck’s/Woodstock’s departure is a sad loss to Phibsborough."

Cafe owners wrote: "Woodstock / MG really aimed to be the 'omnibus eatery' with something for everyone and at the heart of the community.... all good things must come to an end!"

Monk's Green is located on the Phibsborough Road and became known for its extensive menu of breakfast and brunch offerings such as pancakes and other favourites such as their fry, avocado on toast and breakfast burritos. Its name changed from Woodstock to Monk's Green when it received refurbishments in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
