The family of a doctor who served the NHS for more than 50 years have paid tribute to their "loving and caring" father and husband who died of Covid just a week after retiring. Dr Mehboob Ali had been a GP at Pengham Health Centre for 48 years before he died on December 5, 2022.
The 78-year-old from Fleur-de-lis near Blackwood has been described as a "pillar of the community" by his family, and pointed out that as a doctor he had - in some cases - treated five generations of the same family. They said "as a father, friend, leader and role-model, his absence will be deeply felt by his family and the community at large."
Dr Ali had served under the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board who said they were "very saddened" by the news. The doctor tested positive for coronavirus the day after his retirement on November 29, he was admitted to hospital four days later after struggling for breath and died the following day of Covid and pneumonia.
