Beloved baker fighting for life after being dragged by car during violent robbery

A woman is hospitalised in a critical condition after suffering serious head injuries during a robbery.

Police said that Jennifer Angel, 48, was targeted while she was sitting in her car in the parking lot of a bank in San Francisco, California, US, on Monday afternoon.

The robbers allegedly grabbed some items from her car and she got out and chased them.

Angel was then dragged by their car and suffered serious injuries to her head. She was rushed to the hospital where she remains on life support.

Friends of Angel, who ran a bakery in Oakland, said she was popular and beloved among the community. Many gathered at her shop on Wednesday to show support and wish for her recovery.

Moira Birss, a close friend of Angel's, said that she is fighting for her life. She told Fox News: "Unfortunately she hasn't regained consciousness and it seems pretty unlikely that she will.

"She was a baker, she was a community gatherer like I said and she was an activist.

"Part of what was so special about Jen is she held on to all these threads of her that were interwoven throughout her life."

Another friend, Matt Leonard, added: "There's a community space tonight to honour Jen and there are about 550 people invited on Facebook. That gives a little look at how many lives she's touched."

Dana Perls, another friend, described how she was helped by Angel. She said: "She always asked we talk to somebody we don't know, to make new friends.

"Jen has really taught me to think about the space in between black and white and what are the nuances of life and decisions and connections."

Angel's fiance, Ocean Mottley, said he is "devastated and can't sleep because [he] can't stop crying," and described the chilling moment of her injury.

He told the San Fransisco Chronicle that a car pulled up in front of her and blocked her from leaving as she was exiting her parking spot in the garage of the Wells Fargo on the 2000 block of Webster Street.

According to Mottley, a robber then broke her passenger side window and grabbed something from the car, and, while trying to chase them down, she got caught in the door of the fleeing vehicle.

The woman was dragged more than 50 feet before falling in the middle of the street, hitting her head multiple times, Mottley said.

Mottley said he is uncertain what the suspects took because her purse and phone were both recovered at the scene.

A person who witnessed the event stayed at the scene and picked up Angel’s phone when her friend tried to call, he said.

Oakland Police officials said an investigation in the incident is ongoing and asked that anyone with information contact the OPD Criminal Investigation Division at (+1)510-238-3326.
