Belgian GP survives axe from 2023 F1 calendar following fears over iconic race's future

The Belgian Grand Prix will remain part of the Formula 1 calendar in 2023 despite fears the race could be dropped..

A statement released ahead of this year's Belgian Grand Prix said: "Formula 1 can confirm that the Belgian Grand Prix will be on the 2023 calendar following an agreement to extend our partnership together. Further details on the 2023 calendar will be announced in due course."

F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali told Sky Sports: "We have to congratulate the job [the race organisers] did. You've seen the investment they did.

"You see the number of people that are coming here… Incredible crowd, incredible attention to the people, and this is great. Great I think for the sport.

"We always said that the race is a part of our tradition, and it has a very important space in our calendar, and this is a fact that we wanted to share in this moment."

When pressed on the future of the race beyond 2023, Domenicali added: "We will see, we do step-by-step now."

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem added: "We're happy also with Belgium. Let's enjoy the moment for next year and for the future I'm sure Stefano will make the right decision."

Spa-Francorchamps has been the sole host of the Belgian Grand Prix since the 1985 and this year's race will be the 55th on the circuit, with Ferrari's Carlos Sainz starting on pole position.

The 2023 F1 season is set to feature a record 24 races and a new Grand Prix in Las Vegas has already been confirmed. A race in South Africa is also reportedly being discussed.

The Chinese Grand Prix is set to return next year after the country's Covid travel restrictions meant it was not included on this year's calendar, while the Qatar Grand Prix will also return after a hiatus designed to allow the country to focus on hosting the World Cup.
