Belfast man with Cystic Fibrosis runs out of medicine as flight home cancelled again

The family of a Belfast man with Cystic Fibrosis stuck in Amsterdam has criticised easyJet after repeated flights home have been cancelled.

Jordan Hamilton has been left fearing for his health after running out of medicine while waiting for a flight home from the city after two separate ones were cancelled.

He has been out in Amsterdam with his family for a Christmas present and had been due to fly home on Friday, April 22, when he was told at the airport that the flight would not be going ahead.

The only flight available after this was on Monday, April 25, but that meant that he would have to go days without his vital Kafttrio medicine after it ran out on Saturday.

However, as he was preparing to go to the airport and finally get home today, he was informed that this flight had also been cancelled and says easyJet were unable to provide him with information as to when he could get another flight home.

His sister Danielle, who is with Jordan in Amsterdam, told Belfast Live that she was "disgusted" with the airline who have "left them stranded for days".

She said: "It has been disgusting the way that we have been treated throughout all of this. We have been given no reason why another flight has been cancelled and we have stressed that this is a medical emergency.

"Jordan ran out of his Cystic Fibrosis medicine on Saturday and has not been able to get any more and we have been desperate for him to return home.

"We paid an additional £200 so that he would be able to get a flight home today, but this flight has also now been cancelled.

"We have now had to pay an additional £400 to get him a flight from Amsterdam to Dublin with another airline, which means we are further out of pocket and we feel it is completely unacceptable that easyJet have left us in this position."

Danielle is due to fly home on Wednesday, but says that she has no faith in her scheduled flight actually going ahead following all the problems they have faced so far.

There is a large number of other people from Belfast who are also stuck in Amsterdam, some of whom have been sleeping at the airport while they try and find a way to get home.

In response, easyJet stated: "easyJet can confirm that flight EJU6772 from Amsterdam to Belfast today was required to be cancelled due to ongoing operating restrictions at Amsterdam airport as a result of strong winds, combined with runway maintenance.

“While this was outside of our control we would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience, particularly to those passengers who were also affected over the weekend by cancellations on the same route due to the airport restrictions put in place.

“We understand how frustrating this will be for our customers and we are doing all possible to minimise the impact of the disruption, providing hotel accommodation and meals where required as well as options to transfer to an alternative flight free of charge, or receive a voucher or a refund.

"Our customer service team are in touch directly with some customers who we are aware require additional support, to ensure their wellbeing.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is always our highest priority.”
