Belfast children lose access to play park after arson

Children in South Belfast have lost access to a popular play park after equipment was destroyed by suspects arsonists.

The play park on Stewart Street in the Market area was forced to close after some of the play equipment was set on fire overnight between Tuesday, July 26 and Wednesday, July 27.

It is likely to be closed for a number of weeks due to the length of time it takes to source new equipment for the park.

The Market Development Association said: "Last night equipment in Stewart Street Playground was set on fire and damaged. The Stewart Street playground is currently closed until emergency repairs can be made.

"This behaviour is totally unacceptable and now means the children of the community are unable to access the playground.

"Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for any updates regarding Saturday's fun day."

South Belfast SDLP councillor Gary McKeown said he hoped that the playpark would be open again to the public as soon as possible.

He said: "It's really upsetting to see the playground being attacked in this way. It's a vital community asset for parents and children, particularly at this time of year, and I'm sure that the kids who play in the park and the families and friends who meet here will be devastated.

"I just can't get my head around why anyone would do this. It's mindless vandalism.

"I've spoken to the council's parks team about getting the playground made safe and reopened as soon as possible, but there is concern that it could take some time to get replacement equipment."
