Belfast boxing club holding summer camp hosted by two-time Olympian

How would you like to learn the basics of boxing under the expert guidance of a two-time Olympian?

St Paul's ABC is running a special summer camp aimed at young people aged between 6-15 during the months of July and August

The course is being run by Commonwealth and European Games silver medallist, Brendan Irvine, who also competed at the Rio (2016) and Tokyo (2020) Olympics.

The six-week camp will be held every Saturday morning from 10-11am and starts on July 15.

During the course the participants will develop boxing techniques, build self-confidence, learn self-defence and enjoy some high-energy fitness.

Most importantly, they will have plenty of fun.

"The camp gives kids the chance to try our a sport they maybe wanted to try but weren't sure how to," Irvine told Belfast Live.

"They can try it out and see if they like it, and if they do then there are so many options and clubs they can join. We have about seven or eight signed up already which is great.

"If it proves successful I will do another one. It is good for the kids and gives them an insight into a new sport.

"A lot of kids now play GAA, soccer, rugby, hockey or whatever. This gives them a chance to try a sport they maybe wanted to try.

"There are lots of kids out there who are maybe nervous about walking into a boxing gym. This camp will give them a taste of the fundamentals of boxing in a fun environment."

"We can show them their stance, how to move forward, back, left and right. And some of the basic punches.

"It will be fun and there will be a few games as well. I hope to have some of the young club members helping out.

"They know what it is like to start out in boxing, and hopefully the kids can relate to that.

"I am looking forward to it. And the kids will definitely enjoy it.

"I enjoy giving something back and coaching the younger kids. There is a lot of talent out there, and I am sure there is a lot of potential out there who just haven't had the chance to try the sport yet.

"This is their chance to come along and see what it's about."

The six-week camp costs £45 and anyone interested can contact Brendan Irvine or St Paul's ABC on Facebook.
