What’s new: Beijing has suspended in-person classes at after-school training institutions, authorities said Monday, after the Chinese capital confirmed five new Covid-19 cases, including two students.
The new cases were confirmed between 3 p.m. Sunday and 4 p.m. Monday, local authorities said at a press conference. Among them, two are primary school students who have recently visited local institutions that offer non-curriculum training classes, authorities said.
It remains unclear how long the suspension will last. Earlier on Monday, the city had suspended all in-person classes at local arts and culture after-school tutoring institutions, according to a notice issued by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism.
What’s more: The move comes as Beijing is dealing with a local Covid-19 outbreak that has grown to 35 confirmed cases since March 7.
Some primary and middle schools in Beijing’s central Dongcheng and Xicheng districts have required students who have attended after-school classes since March 7 to undergo Covid-19 testing and temporarily study at home, Caixin has learned.
