Behind the scenes at Shawarma King Glasgow where family and neighbours make the perfect recipe

Think shawarma and anyone living in Glasgow will likely have their minds turn to one place located just seconds from the city centre and a short walk to the Barras.

Shawarma King - a popular take-away is going from strength to strength having just won an award making them winners of Scotland’s Best kebab House for 2023 and 2022.

If you haven't seen them on your Instagram feed or on our website, then there may be a good chance you've seen them on TikTok as their content often goes viral with one post gaining near one million views.

The King Street fast food spot has been described as "Glasgow's finest" with people travelling all over the world to try their tasty food. And to add to it all, one Irish food reviewer has gone viral himself after labelling their chicken kebab as "genuinely one of the nicest things I've ever eaten."

With its soaring success, Glasgow Live wanted to talk to the people behind the business and sat down with owner, Majed Badrekhan.

The 27-year-old admits that the success of the eatery and winning awards has often left him "shaken".

He said: "We were surprised of course because there's so many shops and the last time we won best kebab house in Scotland, all the restaurants were good like German Donner.

"I was a bit shaken. It was a very good time for us. We've all been so happy it's an amazing feeling and we are proud of ourselves."

There's no need to rush home to get your Shawarma fix with the eatery open from 11am until midnight, seven days a week.

"We are always busy - day time, night time and lunch time" the owner added. "It doesn't matter when it is, there is a long queue outside and it makes us happy."

Working alongside his family, Majed told us: "This shop is around nine years old and we are all family. Me and my four brothers work in there - and my dad. It's a family business and we all work together every day.

"When you work for yourself you put all your power in it and when you see that people like your food, you make more. We try to make it nicer and we've been popular because of our nice food."

He continued: "We are from Syria and have been here for 10 years so we started to work here when we arrived in Glasgow and this shop was the best place for us to all work together to be honest.

"We came here and stated working together because we all have experience and know how to do the job. And we already had our recipes."

Starting in their shop at 10am, the team spend around an hour and a half preparing the sauces, salads and putting the shawarma on the fire. And with it being open until midnight, it never stops.

"After five o'clock it gets more busy with people finishing work" he said.

"Then at lunchtime it gets busy too but at night there's always long queues and we really appreciate people waiting that long - we do our best."

Being a business owner can be exhausting and a lot of hard-work goes into it. But there isn't a part of the job Majed dislikes.

He proudly says: "I love my job to be honest and everything that I do. Any place I feel is empty, I join. Cutting the meat, taking the orders, even washing the dishes - anything - I don't mind doing it. I enjoy it all."

While making sure his customers and "lots of regulars" are happy, he says he can't chat to people as much as he used to with the takeaway getting busier.

But his neighbours are just as important with the community welcoming them with open arms over the years that they have held the space with the owner saying that they are always looking out for one another.

He said: "Our neighbours are lovely people to be honest. We always say hi to each other and we get to know them. They are friendly people so we sometimes share things together like there's a clothes shop and they sometimes give us clothes and we give them food.

"We always look after each other."

You can find Shawarma King at 113 King St, Glasgow G1 5RB.
