Beeston divided over 'strange' plan to demolish shop and create student flats

A former carpet shop could be demolished and turned into student accommodation under new plans which have been criticised by neighbours.

One resident described the proposal for the former Kings Carpets and Interiors in Hight Road, Beeston, as 'strange'.

If given the green light the plans, submitted to Broxtowe Borough Council by Julian Owen Associate Architects, would lead to a three-story building being created with around 40 bedrooms.

Proposals for student accommodation in a four-storey block with 54 apartments were rejected on the same site, and residents then raised similar concerns.

According to planning documents, the reason for refusal then was because scale and design were out of keeping with the area, along with over-development of the plot, and that it would make local parking issues even worse.

And while the new plans have been designed to fix these issues, the majority of residents on nearby Marlborough Road are still unsure of the new plans.

Charli Clark, 19, a University of Nottingham student studying law, said: "“It’s a bit of a strange location - especially when there is already Broadgate down the road.

“I don’t think that it would fit very well.

“It’s very strange, I don't think it will suit the area very well. There are a lot of students here but there are a lot of families here and old people as well.

“As a student, I like it here but I think it would affect the local people.”

Ben Buffery, 22, a Nottingham Trent University student studying physics, said: “I don't think it’s right for them to be building a massive student accommodation building here because it doesn’t really fit the vibe of the street - they’re all terraced houses.

“I know there are a lot of families that live here.

“It’s probably not the best place to build it - but obviously there’s a lot of students coming to Nottingham and they need somewhere to live.”

Marta Krochmal, 34, a warehouse worker, said: “In my opinion, a big house of flats would ruin the view.

“There’s lots of student accommodation anyway on the opposite side - you’ve got rooms for students.

“So I don’t think it would look good.”

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “I think there’s a lot of building going off in Beeston to accommodate students.

“Do we really need more? I think Beeston is becoming overpopulated

“All we have on the high road is restaurants and cafes - It just seems to be the culture of students.

“Everything that seems to go up is student accommodation.”

Another resident who wised to remain anonymous said: “I’m surprised they can get that many flats there. I can imagine there will be a lot of objections.

“At least it’s on the corner and it was always a big shop. It might be good for the restaurants

“The students have to live somewhere, don't they? There are quite a lot of students already on this road.”

But not everyone was against the proposals.

Gareth Shaw, 28, a postman, said: "It’s fine by me - it’s good for the students.

“It’s near the university and it’s easy to get to.

“I think the students need more properties - so it will be good for them.”
