Beauty spot hit with 36 fires in one week

A Wirral beauty spot has been hit with 36 fires in one week.

Crews from Merseyside Fire and Rescue have been called out to Bidston Hill in Bidston 36 times since Thursday to battle grass fires. A number of these are believed to have been started deliberately.

On Wednesday, a huge fire covering 100m x 30m of grass and gorse at Bidston Hill broke out. Four fire engines were in attendance and on arrival crews found a fire to the rear of Hillside Farm.

Boundary Road was also closed due to a number of fire engines blocking the road while firefighters work on Bidston Hill. Merseyside Fire and Rescue have now issued a warning to people about BBQs, cigarettes and litter.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Temperatures may have dropped but the ground is still extremely dry. If you're spending time outdoors, please respect your surroundings and remember: Leave BBQs at home. Don't light fires in open country, dunes or woodland

"Dispose of cigarettes properly. Take litter home. Whilst some of these fires have been accidental, a number are believed to have been started deliberately.

"Deliberate fire setting not only affects people’s ability to enjoy our parks & woodlands, but it can also have an effect on wildlife. If you have young people at home, speak to them about the consequences of deliberate fire setting.

"It might seem like a bit of harmless fun or 'a laugh' but it's arson - a serious offence that can lead to a criminal record." Wirral Police also issued a warning after a grass fire broke out on Valley Road in Birkenhead.

Officers said this was the second time fire crews were called to the area and believed they were caused by youths. A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers have located a grass fire in Birkenhead near to Valley Rd. Fire crews are on scene for the second time today. We believe these fires have been caused by youths. Where are your children tonight? Ensure they are not involved in this activity."
