'Beautiful' young mum, 21, was killed by man, 47, who then took his own life

A 'beautiful' young mum was killed by a 47-year-old man who then took his own life, police have confirmed.

Lucy Powell, 21, was murdered in her Birmingham home by Gregory Duhamel, who later killed himself.

A post-mortem examination concluded she was smothered and died at the scene.

Officers found Lucy and Duhamel dead in the home after forcing entry into the property following reports of concern from a family member.

In a heartbreaking tribute, Lucy’s family said: "Lucy was a kind, caring beautiful person inside and out and always put a smile on everyone's face.

"She was a brilliant, loving mother to her two young children.

"She was taken from us way too soon and nothing will ever fill the heart-breaking hole in our hearts. Rest in peace our special girl.

"Loved by all, Lucy will be missed so much.”

Locals left floral tributes outside Lucy's home after her death.

Chief Superintendent Mat Shaer, our Birmingham East Police Commander, added: “The post mortem examinations have confirmed our suspicions: this was a murder-suicide and no-one else was involved in the deaths.

“It’s a truly tragic case and my heart goes out to Lucy’s wider family, friends and of course her two young children.

“We have been working with partner agencies to ensure the children receive all the support and help they need.”

Police were dispatched to the home after concerns were raised for the couple, who were not answering calls or messages.

Ambulances were not sent to the home as there was "nothing anyone could do".
