'Beautiful' mum-of-three, 39, dies of illness 'rarer than being struck by lightning'

A 'beautiful' mother-of-three has died from a rare form of cancer which her doctors told her was 'rarer than being struck by lightning'.

Lisa Britton from Leeds battled stage four gastric cancer for 14 months before she sadly passed away aged 39 on July 10, reports Leeds Live.

She leaves behind two sons and a daughter.

Lisa's problems began when she suffered a helicobacter pylori (known as H.pylori) infection which doctors told her was not likely to be stomach cancer - as this is usually diagnosed in people over 60 and more common in men.

However, her family has since "doctors did not follow up" on this infection, and she was later diagnosed with the cancer.

Lisa's oncologist reportedly told her she had more chance of being struck by lightning than getting this form of cancer.

Sharing her memories of Lisa, sister Michelle Britton told Leeds Live : "Our beautiful amazingly talented sister sadly passed away on July 10. Lisa left behind three devastated children and heartbroken family and friends who love her so much.

"Anyone that knew our Lisa, knew she was just one of a kind, she had the biggest heart she was so caring and was the most selfless person we have ever met.

"Even when she was battling this horrible disease alongside intense chemo, radiotherapy and suffering a blood clot on her lung, She never once complained."

She also issued a plea for people to be aware of the symptoms of stomach cancer, adding that anyone with "unusual stomach pains" should "please see your doctor" and "ask for more tests."

Following her passing, the family have now pledged to keep Lisa's memory alive for her children, as well as raise public awareness of stomach cancer.

They recently started a crowdfunding page on Go Fund Me in order to buy a memorial plot in Whinmoor Cemetery.

The family will also be taking on the Three Peaks challenge at the end of September to raise money for stomach cancer charities.
