Ross Tierney hopes a win over Aberdeen can kick-start Motherwell’s season just like it did back in August.
The Dons visit Fir Park this afternoon, keen to avenge a 3-2 defeat up at Pittodrie on August 13, in a game that underlined boss Stevie Hammell’s credentials, leading to him being handed the manager’s job at Motherwell.
That win, with goals from Blair Spittall Callum Slattery and Kevin van Veen, gave the Steelmen a real boost, and after four defeats in five games this month, Tierney hopes three points can have a similar effect.
The Dublin-born midfielder said: “Aberdeen are on a good run. They’ve had a few slip-ups themselves, but we’ve got to focus on ourselves and we know we can get the result.
“I think the last time we played it was one of our best performances this season and hopefully we can do the same again.
“Hopefully it kick-starts our season again.
“We’re a little bit into the season now, but I think that performance showed how well we can play.
“I think there was a little bit of doubt about the gaffer, but I think that showed that he’s ready for this level, as well as the players.”
Tierney, 21,says talisman Kevin van Veen can hopefully play a major part against Aberdeen this afternoon, with the Dutch striker having scored five times in the last five games against the Dons.
That’s also an unbeaten run that Motherwell enjoy against today’s opponents, stretching back to a 2-0 Pittodrie defeat on January 23, 2021, with four wins and a draw to their name.
Tierney said: “I think Kev likes playing against Aberdeen – he always scores, so hopefully he gets another few goals.
“Everything in the dressing room is positive. In the last four defeats three of them have been against the Old Firm, so that’s a tough task in itself.
“In the dressing room we’re still full of confidence. We have a game, so we’re looking to win.
“We keep saying that performances are there, but we’re not getting the results.
“It’s still a long season, but we know we need to start picking up results.
“The fans have been unbelievable. The past couple of games have been disappointing, again, but we know that if we start on the right foot the fans can be good for us.”
Tierney says he’s got mixed thoughts about VAR being introduced to Scottish football this weekend, but feels it will be a benefit, overall.
He said: “As a club we’re looking forward to it, but as a player it’s a little bit slow, maybe.
“Sometimes you’re afraid to celebrate, but I’m sure they’ll come to the right decision.
“There will maybe be a little bit less goals, but I’m sure they’ll come to the right decisions.
“We haven’t really spoken about it, but we’ve watched other games. Even if you think you’re offside, just put the ball in the net, and maybe something will come back and you won’t be.”
