The Chicago Bears’ first series against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers provided a glimpse of what we expected from quarterback Justin Fields and the offense this season.
Fields connected with Moore on two completions for 64 yards, and the 75-yard drive was capped by a one-yard touchdown run from Fields.
Buy Bears TicketsBut then things went downhill.
The same issues that plagued Fields in last week’s season opener — and in his first two NFL seasons — reared their ugly heads. Fields continues to hold onto the ball too long, is taking unnecessary sacks and his internal clock just looks broken.
Is there still time to Fields to develop? Of course. But Bears fans are starting to worry about these recurring issues with Fields and some are starting to believe he might not be the long-term answer at quarterback.
How Bears fans reacted to Justin Fields' performance vs. Bucs
Damn this really hurts to say but I think Fields just ain’t it

Dude’s got time.
Gun shy.
Not good.

Fields holds onto the ball like it’s an heirloom. #Bears
— Rick Morrissey (@MorrisseyCST) September 17, 2023
So far none of these sacks have been on the OL
— Chicago Football Connection (@CFCBears) September 17, 2023
Yoooo Ag. Field awareness my man.
— James Johnson (@SportsGrind_Don) September 17, 2023
Justin Fields is a total roller coaster of a quarterback right now
The big plays are there but he’s not seeing the field well, he’s still holding onto the ball too long and the negative plays are starting to pile up
— Jeremy "Sell the team George" Layton (@JeremyLayt0n) September 17, 2023
Justin.
What are you doing.
— The Irish Bears Show (@IrishBearsShow) September 17, 2023
You can only make so many excuses for Justin Fields at this point.
The pocket presence is simply not where it needs to be in Year 3. Not even close. #Bears
— Jacob Infante (@jacobinfante24) September 17, 2023
Y'all know how much I'm rooting for Justin Fields, but that pocket clock is broken. Gotta fix it fast.
— Luke Easterling (@LukeEasterling) September 17, 2023
What is the deal with Fields?! Get rid of the dang football! #Bears
— Mike Berman (@MikeBermanNBC) September 17, 2023
Not a great sign that Justin Fields can’t feel that rush after an extended period of time holding the ball… #DaBears
— Frank Grizzly (@FrankGrizzly) September 17, 2023
His internal clock is broken.
— Ryan Dengel (@RyanDengel) September 17, 2023
After some promising play early, Justin Fields takes a couple of bad sacks. Have to get rid of the ball on time to open guys. Still a big issue.
— Matt Zahn (@mattzahnsports) September 17, 2023
Have to get rid of the football. Three bad downs in a row by Fields. #Bears
— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) September 17, 2023
I really don't like that JF is dropping his eyes so soon. Stay downfield.
— Dan Bernstein (@dan_bernstein) September 17, 2023
Justin is getting time and holding onto the ball man. At least last year he took off and ran
— 79th & Halas Podcast (@79thAndHalas) September 17, 2023
Throw.
The.
Ball.
Justin.

Fields is playing scared right now. Multiple guys open on back to back plays.

That is the 4th sack this half for the #Buccaneers. Three look to have been a result of Justin Fields holding the ball too long.
— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) September 17, 2023
That was perhaps the worst three downs I’ve seen Fields play. I just don’t understand it. Plenty of time, plenty of options, and he’s a mess.
— DaBearsBlog (@dabearsblog) September 17, 2023
Justin Fields looks lost at times. Holds onto the ball way too long.
— Dave (@dave_bfr) September 17, 2023
Throw the ball.
— Bear Report (@BearReport) September 17, 2023
Throw. It.
— Silvy (@WaddleandSilvy) September 17, 2023
Fields looks lost man
— Khalil Herbert Stan Account (@TommyK_NFLDraft) September 17, 2023
Fields looked horrible there on a few plays in a row.
— Joseph Herff (@JosephHerffNFL) September 17, 2023
Has the Line been great? No.
Has Justin Fields had enough time and open WRs.
Yes.
— Bears Nation (@BearsNationCHI) September 17, 2023
Justin Fields man. Absolutely zero internal clock. Has sacked himself several times today
— Jon Ledyard (@LedyardNFLDraft) September 17, 2023
I don’t know if this is just who Justin Fields is or if the coaching staff has locked him up mentally, but something ain’t right. Either way, I’m sad.
— Chris Rongey (@ChrisRongey) September 17, 2023
I’m trying to separate my Justin Fields fandom from being an objective evaluator.
He still has time to improve this year. But I’m starting to believe he simply isn’t the guy for the #Bears.
