For the optimists out there, the hope was the Chicago Bears’ passing offense would find its footing against the 26th-ranked Houston Texans passing defense.
That certainly hasn’t been the case through the first half of Sunday’s game, where quarterback Justin Fields has turned in a rough outing through 30 minutes of play.
Fields has completed just 4-of-11 passes for 45 yards with one interception. He’s been sacked three time and has two fumbles. In fact, Fields has more rushing yards (47 on five carries) than passing yards.
Following an abysmal interception on an attempt to hit tight end Cole Kmet across the middle of the field, it’s clear offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has gotten ultra conservative and has lost trust in his young quarterback.
Case in point: Getsy called run plays on third-and-17, third-and-10 and third-and-6 in the first half. While Fields has been off, Getsy is justifying the lack of confidence in his quarterback with those kind of play calls.
We’ll see if the Bears can come out of halftime and make adjustments to what is far and away the worst passing offense in the NFL.
