Bears’ Khalil Herbert was the NFL’s most efficient runner in Week 3

Khalil Herbert proved the Bears have another starting-caliber running back behind David Montgomery with an impressive Week 3 outing against the Texans.

After Montgomery exited in the first quarter with an ankle injury, Herbert went off for 157 yards on 20 carries, averaging 7.9 yards per carry, and scoring two touchdowns.

With a non-existent passing game, Herbert essentially carried Chicago’s offense on his back.

According to Next Gen Stats, Herbert was the NFL’s most efficient runner in Week 3 with an efficiency score of 2.51 on his 20 carries. Herbert’s 257 rushing yards were the most of any running back last week. He had the most Rushing Yards Over Expected (RYOE) with 81 and led all backs with a 70% Rush Pct Over Expected (ROE) rate.

Montgomery is considered day-to-day with an ankle injury, but it’s worth noting he didn’t practice Wednesday. If Montgomery can’t go in Week 4, the Bears have trust that Herbert can pick up where he left off against the Giants.
