Bears’ Justin Fields explains the benefit of having a defensive-minded head coach

The three most important people in the Bears organization met with the media on Monday — new general manager Ryan Poles, new head coach Matt Eberflus and quarterback Justin Fields.

One of the main goals for this new regime is maximizing Fields’ ability, which Eberflus is banking on with new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. As we’ve seen this postseason, having a superstar quarterback goes a long way on the path to the Super Bowl.

It’s easy to look at the Rams’ Sean McVay and Bengals’ Zach Taylor and make the connection that they’re offensive-minded head coaches. Which is a big reason why many Bears fans were clamoring for an innovative offensive mind, be it Brian Daboll or Byron Leftwich.

But Fields explained why it’s actually beneficial for him to have a defensive-minded head coach, like Eberflus.

He said a defensive-minded head coach can help a young quarterback get a better understanding about what the defense is doing, such as explaining coverages.

With a defensive-minded head coach in Eberflus, Getsy will be in charge of running the offense and developing Fields. While Fields hasn’t met with Getsy yet, he’s excited that Getsy will be fully invested on leading the offense without also having to run the entire team. Unlike his predecessor.
