Bears’ Justin Fields and Luke Getsy are ‘match made in heaven’

The Chicago Bears hired Luke Getsy as their new offensive coordinator, and they’re entrusting him to develop quarterback Justin Fields and get the offense on track.

Akron head coach Joe Moorhead knows Chicago’s new offensive coordinator well. Moorhead coached Getsy at Akron and gave Getsy his first job as a graduate assistant at Akron. Moorhead also recruited Fields to Penn State before he ultimately decommitted.

So when Moorhead believes the pairing of Getsy and Fields is a good one, it’s hard to argue against him.

“This sounds corny,” Moorhead told The Athletic, “but it’s kind of a match made in heaven for Justin’s skill set.”

The assumption is Getsy presented a detailed plan to build the offense around Fields. Which is music to Bears fans’ ears given former head coach Matt Nagy wasn’t able to utilize Fields’ skillset, and it’s a big reason why Nagy is no longer employed.

While Getsy has served as an offensive coordinator at the college level, he’ll be a first-time play caller and running the entire offense for the first time at the NFL level. Obviously, that presents some concerns.

Moorhead, who got to watch Getsy as a football player and coach, believes he’s ready to take this opportunity and roll with it.

“He had an incredible level of preparedness, of work ethic, of loyalty,” Moorhead said. “He was working with receivers rather than quarterbacks, he was an expert of fundamentals and techniques. He quite frankly did a great job recruiting, too. All the things that have allowed Luke to have success at the NFL level, and why it’s made him a great choice for the OC position for Chicago, are the same reasons that I brought him on at Mississippi State.”
