A new campaign is calling on members of the public to improve their local beach and the environment around it as part of their New Year’s resolution.
The two-minute beach clean is a new initiative by Clean Coasts to encourage people to incorporate a different kind of habit into their routine in 2023.
All members of the public need to do is to visit their local beach and complete a quick two-minute clean-up of the area. By posting their results online and using the hashtag ‘#2minutebeachclean’ they can encourage others to get involved.

Clean Coasts organise a number of beach clean-ups each year, but this quick two-minute task is estimated to remove 1-2kg of litter. each time According to the organisation: “If everybody in Ireland does a #2minutebeachclean per month in 2023, that’s over 100,000 tonnes of litter removed from our ocean.”
For many, New Year’s resolutions can be overwhelming, but this one is designed specifically to be achievable.
“People may think 2 minutes is a very short time to make a difference, but small actions add up to make a big difference. Every piece of plastic removed from the marine environment is no longer a danger to our marine life and environment,” a statement on their website said.
Those who pledge to help the cause on Clean Coast’s website will even be sent out a kit including a reusable cotton bag and gloves.
The two-minute beach clean will have an immediate positive impact on the environment, will help you to contribute to creating a more sustainable community, protect the ocean and marine life, as well as protecting all life on land.
If you don’t live near a beach, the good news is that you can still get involved. Clean Coasts said on their website: “One of the main causes of marine litter is litter dropped in towns and cities. So, if you don’t live on the coast, you can still do your part to protect our ocean in 2 minutes.”
Those taking part in a street clean can also get involved with the online side of things, by using the hashtag ‘#2minutestreetclean’ on social media instead.
Most importantly, be sure to dispose of your litter properly by binning or recycling items.
