Last year, BBC fans were glued to their television screens each week as Martin Compston and Suranne Jones worked together on one of the most watched dramas of the year.
The six-part drama attracted an audience of 13.4 million viewers in its first episode which makes it the highest rated drama launch in the UK.
In addition, its 30-day viewing figures also showed that Vigil was the second most-watched drama of the year with Line of Duty's series six, also featuring Compston, taking the top spot and thus becoming the UK’s highest-rated TV drama in 13 years.
If you don't remember what Vigil was about, the BBC show description reads: "When a crew member is found dead onboard the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, the Scottish Police are called on to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain effective, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva must go aboard to investigate.
"Although the death has been written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, and a new threat overshadows her inquiry."
Announcing the news, the Radio Times took to Twitter and many people jumped for joy.
One said: "Best news! Can’t wait!"
Another added: "Made my day."
A third tweeted: "Thought it was a limited series. Great news either way."
Writer Tom Edge told the RT: "We have probably told as many of the stories as we would wish to tell on a submarine. [But] some of the characters that we have developed as we've made it, they feel like characters that we'd love to burrow into. So if there's a will to do it from everyone else then certainly I would be up for it."
So what do we know about the series?
Will Suranne Jones be returning for Vigil season 2?
According to the Radio Times yes she will be.
Many people loved the story line between her charter, Amy Silva and Rose Leslie's character, DS Kirsten Longacre. Viewers emotionally thanked the show's producers for showing a sapphic relationship proving just how crucial representation is.
So it is clear that this will be much welcomed in season two.
Will Martin Compston be returning for Vigil season 2?
Spoiler alert - but in the first season - and the first episode - Martin Compston's character, Burke, died.
So if he does return, it will likely be flashbacks just as it was for much of season one.
When date will Vigil return for season 2 and how many episodes will there be?
The first season launched in August 2021 with many scenes having been filmed in Scotland - namely Glasgow.
This is set to happen yet again however it is unknown when filming will be taking place. As a result, the air date is also unknown at present.
The same goes for the number of episodes. Season one has six so we can perhaps expect the same.
