BBC Three Glow Up: Glasgow contestant in tears after applause from 'blown away' judges

BBC Three's Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-up Star is back for its fourth series and tonight (May 11) will see two Glasgow make up artists (MUAs) take to our screens.

Hosted by Maya Jama, the show sees 10 aspiring make-up artists put their talents to the test after being handed assignments from TV to theatre, fashion to front covers and on-line beauty campaigns.

The artists were seen travelling to Birmingham for their first professional assignment - a social media campaign for sport and fitness brand, Gymshark.

Guest judge Ivy Weir-Ikpeme, the company’s styling manager, challenged the MUAs to produce a gym-friendly, natural make-up look for their diverse customer base.

In the first episode, Glaswegian contestant, Yong-Chin, a freelance make-up artist and part time nanny who now lives in London battled it out against nine others - including 21-year-old Adam - a freelance MUA originally from Glasgow who now resides in Liverpool.

Bidding to become the winner, the judges sat down and took a look at what the artists had created.

Discussing Adam's look, Weir-Ikpeme said: "It's such a beautiful, beautiful shot but we wanted something to engage on our social media channels."

Judge Val Garland, L’Oréal Paris Global Makeup Director and British Vogue Contributing Beauty Editor added: "Great skin, great brows, great lashes but I am so bored. We need something to make this an exciting campaign."

Next up was Yong-Chin and the judges also called it "beautiful" and got two thumbs up with Ivy Weir-Ikpeme, Styling Manager at Gymshark adding: "I really feel that fulfils what I was looking for."

Another judge added they loved the "heartbeat" by her eyes however felt it was in the "wrong place."

The MUA chosen to shoot the next Gymshark campaign however was contestant Lisa but the Glaswegians thankfully didn't see the face off and were safely through to the next round.

In the next round, contestants were asked to create a look showing their "hidden strengths" using their own faces over a period of two and a half hours.

Youg-Chin decided to use latex to create a crater for a 3D element creating a galaxy and "atomic explosion" look with her chosen strength being "focus".

The judges thought she "executed it to a t" adding they were "blown away" by the look and her central focal point adding how talented she was to make the look herself using liquid latex and cotton wool.

The judges even ended up giving her a round of applause as she wiped the happy tears away.

Up next was Adam's look using his strength of "bravery".

Showing off his skills the judges said they loved the asymmetry however wanted a more seamless finish asking him to step outside his comfort zone more to show his bravery.

Both MUAs yet again managed to escape the face off and will now appear in the second episode creating powerful looks inspired by the Cirque du Soleil.

Talking about all the looks, people on Twitter praised the show adding they loved the MUAs.

One tweeted: "Very happy #GlowUp is back and blown away by Yong-chin’s look already!."

A second added: "I love seeing all the creativity , incredible what you can do with makeup."

A third pointed out: "Love love LOVE them continuing to show the contestants' pronouns on their chyrons and showing one of them checking what pronouns their model uses. Lovely stuff."
