BBC The Split viewers are fuming as broadcaster issues spoiler at end of return

Fans of The Split were delighted on Monday night as the series finally returned to TV screens. But it does come with a tinge of sadness for those who have followed the Defoe family as the third run of the legal drama will be the last.

The series, starring Nicola Walker and Stephen Mangan follows the lives of the three Defoe sisters, Hannah "Walker), Nina (Annabel Scholey) and Rose (Fiona Button) as well as their mother Ruth (Deborah Findlay).

And the first of the six episodes in the final season has already got fans talking. But here's your SPOILER ALERT warning if you're yet to see it.

There was a shock in the closing moments of episode one as viewers learn that James Cutler (Rudi Dharmalingam) – the husband of Defoe sister Rose – has been hit by a car whilst riding his bike, and the whole family rushes to the hospital. It came after Rose and James got into a fight about Rose's reluctance to explore the adoption route as they were about to head to an adoption centre.

But at the hospital, it appears the family are given heartbreaking news, with Rose breaking down as Nina, Hannah and her mother Ruth support her.

As the first episode came to an end and fans took in what they had just watched, viewers were hit with a major spoiler from the BBC's continuity announcer with one saying that it was a strong contender for 'spoiler of the year'.

@ETLCOLINB tweeted: "Continuity announcer puts in a strong entry in for Spoiler of the year award. Last year's winner was #CliveTyldesley revealing The World's Strongest Man winner during #Euro2020. #TheSplit."

"Nicola Walker as sublime as ever. But way to go BBC spoiling the reason for Lenny’s divorce #TheSplit," @alicat1231 said.

@appfoto fumed: "Did anyone else notice the beeb giving away one of the plot lines at the very end? MND for Lenny!! Grrrrrr #TheSplit #FFS."

"Absolutely balling at the last 10 mins #thesplit Also naughty #bbc giving away a spoiler with their helpline at the end! At least check the episode contains that revelation first! Gutted it is the last series," @Kathryn_1000 commented.

@themaidmarian shared: "Do NOT tell me that the BBC just gave out a massive spoiler about Lennie by giving out information for the action line during the credits?!?! #thesplit."

"Terrific plot spoiler - what was up with Lennie wasn’t mentioned but we had an action line announcement. Well done BBC. #TheSplit," @MrsAri added.
