BBC The Responder creator issues update to fans on second series

The creator of the BBC's biggest new drama has issued an update on the future of the programme.

The Responder follows Chris Carson (Martin Freeman), a crisis-stricken, morally compromised, unconventional urgent response officer tackling a series of night shifts on the beat in Liverpool.

Whilst trying to keep his head above water both personally and professionally, Chris is forced to take on a new rookie partner Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo).

Both soon discover survival in this high pressure, relentless, night-time world will depend on them either helping or destroying each other.

The show was created by ex-police officer Tony Schumacher, who worked for Merseyside Police.

Tony has recently shared a tweet with fans hinting towards a second series of the hit drama show.

One fan, named Sue, tweeted her admiration for the programme, as she wrote: "I loved it, thought Martin Freeman's accent was ace, Marko & Kacy had me laughing and heartbroken in equal measure and the depiction of mental health was so true to life.

"Hoping there is a 2nd series."

Tony shared the post, adding his own comment, as he wrote: "So am I!"

Sue wasn't the only fan hoping for a second series of the show with other viewers taking to Twitter to echo her demands.

Ian Murrary tweeted: "Martin Freeman in The Responder WOW!!! Brilliant actor and more of a surprise to me, brilliant accent. Some really great performances and we will have a series 2 of this if you don't mind matey!"

Glyn Bawden tweeted: "Can we have series 2 soon? Tomorrow is fine. Best show I’ve seen for ages. Martin Freeman was unbelievable."

Mick Clark tweeted: "Just finished The Responder. Really enjoyed it, great script, fantastic acting, and Martin Freeman has the accent down to a tee. Looking forward to series 2?

Tony has previously admitted The Responder is heavily influenced by his time in the force and reflects his past life.

He said: "In some way, I feel that I am The Responder to a degree and that this is my story.

"I was a police responder who was out in the rain at one o'clock in the morning, two in the morning, three in the morning, chasing people up and down alleyways and running over rats."

Tony added: "I quit the police because, and there's no getting away from it, I was cracking up in the police force.

"And I had this overwhelming urge to write."
