BBC The Responder creator issues perfect response to Alan Sugar's Scouse jibe

The creator of BBC's The Responder was praised as he issued a perfect response to Lord Alan Sugar's Scouse jibe.

Tony Schumacher received critical acclaim for his hit BBC 2 drama, which followed a morally compromised urgent response officer tackling a series of night shifts on the beat in Liverpool. The show was inspired by the former Merseyside Police officer's experiences working for the force and Martin Freeman played lead character, Chris Carson.

The show earned a string of nominations and awards, but it seemed not everybody was a fan as Alan Sugar took to Twitter to question why the actors in the Liverpool-set show had Scouse accents.

He tweeted when the show was first broadcast last year: "Why did the BBC make Martin Freeman speak with a Liverpool accent in The Responder. Hard to follow what he and other cast are saying.

"No disrespect to people of Liverpool they are nice down to earth people. My wife gave up watching she said she could not understand a word."

Followers were baffled as former Hollyoaks actor turned director Matt Littler replied: "It’s…it’s set in Liverpool. That’s… I’m not sure how to answer." Lord Sugar attempted to clarify as he said: "It might be set in Liverpool . I can understand Steven Gerrard. I can't understand the character. Sorry but true."

Tony watched last night's season premiere of The Apprentice as a new batch of budding entrepreneurs aim to win a job with a six figure salary. However, the Scouse writer took to social media as he referenced the criticism with a a hilarious response to Lord Sugar.

He shared a photo of Lord Sugar on the TV screen, alongside the caption: "I've had to put subtitles on #Notaword."

Followers took to the comments in stitches as they praised the response.

Micky said: "That one brewed well."

Pippa added: "Touché"

Craig commented: "Quality Tony"
