Viewers of The One Show were left confused and angry after millionaire filmmaker Richard Curtis told the public to switch their pension to a more sustainable one. He appeared on the show this evening (May 18) to discuss how pensions could be causing deforestation.
He was informing the One Show audience that pension funds are invested into places that contribute to deforestation, and we should try to put our money in more sustainable places. He said it was ‘profitable’ and ‘sensible’ to switch your pension to a more sustainable one. He suggested if people didn’t have pensions they should opt for a sustainable pension.
He said: “It’s not a huge amount of work - every single day of your life you could be investing in good businesses, rather than businesses that are damaging the planet.”
Despite the fact his advice was well-meaning, people were fuming at the advice the millionaire gave and took to Twitter to express their anger. One person tweeted: “As if multi millionaire Richard Curtis is worried about pensions," follwed by an eye-roll emoji.
Another commented on the fact that he isn’t qualified to give pension advice, writing: “There should be a qualified pension advisor on the show when talking about pensions.” Someone else shared the same sentiment: “See an IFA [Institute of Financial Accountants] about pensions not a One Show guest.”
One watcher made no secret of the fact he wasn’t impressed, but perhaps misunderstood the argument the filmmaker was making: “Oh god. Me and the wife have had to cut our hols down to only going away 27 times this year instead of 29. It’s a living hell I tell ya #t***er #RichardCurtis”
