BBC The One Show's Alex Jones reacts as Griff Rhys Jones almost slips up

Welsh comedian Griff Rhys Jones joined The One Show presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp during the BBC One instalment that aired on Thursday, March 9. Griff, who is also a writer and actor, was on the weeknight show to discuss his new comedy tour, The Cat's Pyjamas.

As Alex and Roman introduced Griff to The One Show, it wasn't long before talk turned to the unusual title of his new tour. "It's a very interesting name, what can we expect?" Roman asked the Welsh star.

"Well obviously, I dress up as a cat and I wear pyjamas," Griff joked, before adding he had a "list of titles" but wasn't allowed to use one of them.

"When I was first in comedy we used to have a rule, we weren't allowed to talk about titles for more than one afternoon a week," Griff told the hosts, before explaining that otherwise, comedians would "spend their whole time" discussing options.

"I had a list of titles but in the end, I liked The Cat's Pyjamas, it's just a great phrase," Griff said. "In Ireland, they talk about the spider's ankles, apparently it's the same thing."

"So that's the follow-on tour?" Roman jokingly suggested before Griff stopped himself from saying a rude phrase on air. "The dog's... um," Griff said to the hosts, obviously referring to the phrase the dog's b****cks, before stopping and reassuring the studio: "I know what a watershed is."

Griff went on: "When you look it up in the dictionary of slang, it says it was first used by Mel Smith, in a play that he wrote called The Gambler."

He then added: "And we all use it now, don't we?" before quipping: "So, that was the alternative title, but apparently I wasn't allowed to use it." Pulling a face and giggling, Alex then said: "We like The Cat's Pyjamas, and it's more suitable for 7pm."

The Cardiff-born comic's new stand-up tour will follow on from his last hugely successful international tour, All Over The Place, and will see him travel the country sharing hilarious anecdotes relating to TV, his childhood and his Welsh family. The Cat's Pyjamas starts on Friday, May 12.

The One Show continues weekdays on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 7pm. For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.
