BBC Scotland Mayflies: First images of Martin Compston on set released ahead of new drama

A first look at the brand new BBC Scotland drama Mayflies - starring Martin Compston - has been released, as further casting for the new series is announced.

Set and filmed in Scotland, Mayflies is a new television series adapted from the Andrew O'Hagan novel of the same name, and will star actors like our very own Martin and Tony Curran.

Alongside previously announced Ashley Jensen as Anna, further names joining the cast include Tracy Ifeachor as Iona, Tom Glynn-Carney as young Tully, Rian Gordon as young Jimmy, Paul Gorman as young Hogg, Elaine C Smith as Barbara and Shauna Macdonald as Fiona.

Everyone has a Tully Dawson (Tony Curran) - the friend who defines your life. In the summer of 1986, in a small Scottish town, Jimmy (Martin Compston) and Tully ignite a brilliant friendship based on music, films and the rebel spirit.

With school over and the locked world of their fathers before them, they rush towards the climax of their youth - a magical weekend in Manchester, the epicentre of everything that inspires them in working-class Britain.

There, against the greatest soundtrack ever recorded, a vow is made: to go at life differently. Thirty years on, half a life away, the phone rings. Tully has the worst kind of news, and a request that will test their friendship, love, and loyalty to the limit.

Mayflies is a memorial to youth’s euphoria and to everyday tragedy. A tender goodbye to an old union, it discovers the joy and the costs of love.

In the new images, a heavily-bearded Martin can be seen sporting glasses and a striped shirt as Tully's friend, Jimmy. Filming recently took place for Mayflies around Glasgow and Ayrshire.

Mayflies will air later this year on BBC One, BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer. For more information, visit the BBC website here for further details.
