BBC's Vigil series two confirmed with major 'plot twist' and cast shake up for hit drama's return

After its first series proved to be gripping viewing, BBC thriller Vigil will return, with a major change to its plot and a few new faces joining the cast.

The intense first run of Vigil, which saw ex Coronation Street and Doctor Foster star Suranne Jones lead the ranks as DCI Amy Silva, had millions on the edges of their seat with each new episode back in 2021, as Suranne's character was tasked to getting to the bottom of a mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and bottom of a death on submarine HMS Vigil.

Amy's investigations put her in mortal danger, with one chilling moment seeing her trapped in a torpedo tube, having been put there by treacherous crew member Matthew Doward, before he brutally murdered Lt Commander Prentice, who himself had fallen under suspicion earlier in the series.

Thankfully, despite Doward's villainous efforts, Amy did get free in the final episode of series one, paving the way for her to return to duty for Vigil's second series. However, in a big change to the BBC show's format for its return, the plot will see DCI Silva take to the skies with a brand new case in another part of the British military, the air force.

A synopsis for the series reads: “Following multiple unexplained fatalities at a Scottish military facility, Silva and Longacre are tasked with uncovering the cause.

“Entering the hostile and closed ranks of the air force, the pair must face the deadly warfare of tomorrow as they fight for their own future.”

As well as a change of location, Vera's second series will also welcome new faces to the cast, with Romola Garai (Becoming Elizabeth, The Hour), Dougray Scott (Crime, Enigma), Amir El-Masry (SAS Rogue Heroes, Limbo), David Elliot (The Liberator, Bulletproof) and Chris Jenks (Sex Education, Karen Pirie) all landing roles in the drama.
