Steve Cram returned to the BBC commentary box this weekend, a week after he was the subject of a chant from Newcastle United fans at Wembley.
Jarrow athlete Steve has been a permanent fixture of the BBC's athletics coverage for decades now, after taking off his running shoes for a final time and was back in action behind the mic as live footage of the European Indoor Championships from Istanbul took over BBC2 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
It is well known that South Tyneside legend Steve is a keen Sunderland supporter and it's that fact that has seen him become the focus of an anti SAFC song from Newcastle supporters. And chants of 'They've got Steve Cram, celebrity fan' rang out around Boxpark Wembley last Sunday as Magpies supporters packed out the venue ahead of their Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester United.
As a young fan could be heard shouting on the mic, other supporters joined in with the chant to the tune of He's Got The Whole World in His Hands ending: 'Sunderland's a massive club. Are they f**k?!" Other insults in the chant, included one about the Stadium of Light having '27,000 empty seats.'
A video of the chant did the rounds on Twitter and Sunderland fans blasted their rivals for singing about them, with one responding: "Their big day out, and we’re the first thing that comes to their minds, enjoy the trip back lads"
Steve also got a cheeky dig from NUFC fans after Sunderland's awful 5-1 defeat to Stoke at home on Saturday, with one taking to Twitter at full time, hours after United lost to Man City, to post: "Gary Rowell….Steve Cram….James Heriot….your boys took a hell of a beating…" and, another, along the same lines writing: "Steve Cram, Paul Collingwood, Dave Stewart @JimSAFC your boys took one hell of a beating."
Away from the football banter, BBC viewers were happy that Crammy was back on the TV, with one taking to Twitter post: "Enjoying Steve Cram’s ‘Geordie’ commentary."
