BBC's Silent Witness series 26: Cast, plot, air date and locations for the crime drama

BBC One drama Silent Witness, which follows a team of forensic pathologists, is back for its 26th series. The show has been running since 1996.

The drama is set in the world of forensic pathology with a team of the nation's best investigators solving crimes across the country. Over the years, Silent Witness has gained many fans and remains a popular drama on BBC One.

This new series will see the return of Silent Witness airing its episodes as two parts on two consecutive nights. Here is everything you need to know about the new series.

When does Silent Witness begin on BBC One?

The 26th series of Silent Witness will begin on Monday, January 2, at 9pm on BBC One. The series is returning to its old format of airing the episodes in two parts on consecutive nights. This means that the next episode of Silent Witness will air on Tuesday, January 3, at 9pm on BBC One. The drama is expected to remain in the Monday and Tuesday 9pm slots on BBC One and there will be ten episodes in the series.

What is the Silent Witness plot?

Following a team of forensic pathologists as they solve crimes, character Dr Nikki Alexander, played by Emilia Fox, is set to star at the centre of the new series. When a man is thrown from a high-rise building, the team are propelled into the criminal underworld of a notorious mafia group, the Ndrangheta.

Aided by the National Crime Agency, Nikki and her team set about uncovering the truth. As they descend deeper into the murky depths of the investigation, Nikki soon finds herself caught in the mafia's web, with deadly consequences.

Who are in the Silent Witness cast?

Emilia Fox as Dr Nikki Alexander: Key character Dr Nikki Alexander is being played by Emilia Fox. Emilia has played Nikki since 2004 and also starred in the BBC drama Pride and Prejudice, Merlin, and The Trial of Christine Keeler.

David Caves as Jack Hodgson: Forensic scientist Jack Hodgson is played by David Caves. Previously, David has worked extensively on stage and appeared in TV show, Crime Thriller Club.

Aki Omoshaybi as Dr Gabriel Folukoya: New to the team is Dr Gabriel Folukoya who will be played by Aki Omoshaybi. Aki's work includes Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi and Midsomer Murders.

Alastair Michael as Velvy Schur: Also new to the team is anatomical pathology technologist trainee Velvy Schur who is being played by Alastair Michael. He has starred in Ridley Road and Snatch.

William Willoughby as Anthony Drinkwater: Playing Anthony Drinkwater is William Willoughby. William is a stuntman and actor who has acted as a stunt double for some huge names including Andrew Garfield and James Franco.

Sophia Myles as Laine Cassidy: Welsh actress Sophia Myles is playing Laine Cassidy in Silent Witness. She has starred in Welsh shows including Doctor Who and A Discovery of Witches.

Matteo Carlmagno as Stephen Ross: Director, author and actor Matteo Carlmagno is playing Stephen Ross. He has starred in Jumper and All the Money in the World.

Tristan Ruggeri as Luca: Tristan Ruggeri is playing Luca and he is a child actor who has starred in The Witcher, The Twin and Bodies.

Issy Knopfier as Chloe: Playing Chloe is Issy Knopfier who has previously been in Before We Die and Two.

Where was Silent Witness filmed?

Silent Witness is filmed in London, with many scenes of the city shown in the series. Filming mostly takes place in the West Acton area and the series moved to being filmed in London from Cambridge in 1999.
