BBC's Marriage viewers criticise sound of drama and say there's 'too much mumbling'

Viewers watching new BBC drama Marriage have hit out at the show - saying there is too much mumbling.

The four-part programme stars Sean Bean and Nicola Walker which follows the lives of married couple Ian and Emma.

But despite being a hit with most critics, some have been less than convinced by the sound, with many saying they need subtitles to understand what they are saying.

Julie Whitehouse said: “Straight away I’m having to put subtitles on, why do so many dramas have poor sound or mumbling actors.”

Chris Lewis said: “Sorry, but even with subtitles I still couldn’t make out most of the dialogue - so gave up.”

Laura Vickers-Green agreed. She said: “Are we the only ones who’ve had to put the subtitles on because we can’t hear the sound?! I feel like I’m 105.”

Kay Redgewell said: “Sean Bean & Nicola Walker are worth better than this. Too much mumbling! Think I might give tonight’s episode a miss & clean the oven instead.”

The broadcaster has previously received thousands of complaints from people unable to hear the dialogue in dramas including Jamaica Inn, SS-GB and Happy Valley.

The show is written by Stefan Golaszewski, who is behind BAFTA-winning drama Mum. He also created Him & Her, which was named Best Situation Comedy at the 2014 ceremony.

“I’m thrilled to be playing opposite the talented Nicola Walker and I’m looking forward to bringing Stefan’s intimate scripts to the screen,” says Bean, while Walker adds: “This is a unique project. Stefan has created such a beautiful, funny and complicated world and I’m excited to be stepping into Ian and Emma’s marriage with Sean.”

Golaszewski is also the director and one of the executive producers.

“It’s amazing to get to work with Sean and Nicola,” he said when the casting was announced last September. “They’re actors of such depth, truth and warmth, and I can’t wait to go on this journey with them.”

The series begins with two episodes. The first, broadcast on Sunday, introduces viewers to the main protagonists as they return from holiday, each with a new start ahead of them - while Emma’s promotion prospects are looking good, Ian has recently been made redundant and is looking for a fresh start.

Meanwhile, their daughter Jessica brings home her new boyfriend to meet them.

Tonight, Ian is upset when Emma fails to tell him she’s been invited to attend a conference.

The BBC said: "Marriage went through all of the normal sound checks prior to broadcast and pre your enquiry we haven’t received any complaints."
