BBC's Hazel Irvine breaks news of serious crash at Commonwealth Games as cyclists and fan injured

A concerned looking Hazel Irvine broke news of a serious crash in Commonwealth Games cycling as she interrupted the BBC's live coverage to make the announcement.

Long-serving host Hazel was rounding up the other sports news of the day before gearing up to cross live to the women's gymnastics when she paused to deliver the news reaching her from the velodrome. She told viewers at home: "In the last few minutes we've received word at the velodrome in London about a significant crash there in the men's scratch race."

BBC presenter Hazel continued: "We understand that in heat two, Matt Walls, who is England and Team GB's Olympic champion has been involved in a crash, in fact he has gone over the barriers, we understand.

"Now all the action has been suspended for the time being as the riders, also including Matt Bostock of the Isle of Man, are receiving treatment. We'll clearly bring you any further news as soon as we get it."

Reports from the scene claim that a fan was taken away in a wheelchair covered in blood, while a shield was put up to shields Walls. After the crash, British cycling tweeted: "Following a crash in the men’s scratch, Matt Walls & Matt Bostock are being treated by medics before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

"We send our best wishes to the riders and spectators involved in the incident, and will provide a further update when we can.

England's race team added: "Thoughts are with all the riders involved in the crash in the velodrome."
