Happy Valley were left 'feeling sick' and fearing the worst as a warning was given from a BBC announcer at the start of Sunday's finale.
Nine years after millions first got invested in the exploits of Sergeant Catherine Cawood, Happy Valley came to an end this weekend, with the sixth and final episode of its new series airing on BBC One at 9pm as a huge audience tuned into see how things would turn out.
The penultimate episode which aired on January 29 set things up nicely for a tense last episode, when, after breaking free from court, Catherine's nemesis Tommy Lee Royce made contact with son Ryan, Catherine's grandson, via an online game as tried to convince him to run off to Spain with him.
There was another tense scene when Catherine launched a verbal assault on sister Clare, still reeling in the aftermath of finding out she and boyfriend Neil had been taking Ryan to see Tommy in prison.
Arriving at the end of a week which saw countless theories aired by Happy Valley viewers on Twitter, shows being accused of 'spoiling' the show and reports of different endings being filmed, the Happy Valley finale was the main topic of conversation on Twitter and things went up a notch after the introduction it got from the announcer on BBC One.
Seconds before it started, they issued a warning to viewers, saying: "What does fate have in store for Catherine then? I do hope you're ready. With strong violence, prolonged violent scenes and scenes that some viewers might find upsetting, for one last time let's head to Happy Valley."
And it was the mention of prolonged violent scenes that sent nerves jangling amongst Happy Valley fans. Rushing to Twitter, one said: "Prolonged violent scenes" !!!! f**k I feel sick," with another tweeting: "“Prolonged violent scenes” uh oh"
A third reacted: "Prolonged violent scenes … lucky I activated the emergency hot Ribena protocol"
