The One Show hosts Alex Jones and Alex Scott opened Monday’s instalment of the BBC evening chat show with a discussion of the controversy at last night’s Oscars.
Will Smith shocked the star-studded audience and viewers at home on Sunday night as he stormed on stage and slapped Chris Rock in the face on live television.
While presenting for the best documentary feature category, the comedian decided to throw a jibe about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, saying: “Jada, can't wait for GI Jane 2.”
Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia, looked furious as the comedian made light of her appearance, just moments before husband Will leapt to her defence.
Will then walked up to the stage and slapped the presenter, before returning to his seat before shouting: “Keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth.”
The One Show saw guests Gary Oldman and Stephen Mangan gracing the BBC sofa, but before the conversation got underway, Alex Jones turned matters to the jaw-dropping Hollywood moment.
She said: “We have to start with last night’s Oscars. The only thing that people have been talking about has been the moment where Will Smith hit Chris Rock about making a joke about his wife.”
She then added: “But the other winners have somewhat been overshadowed as a result, which is a bit of a shame, isn’t it?”
Co-host Alex Scott replied: “It is, because everyone’s obviously talking about the other events that went on.”
As the 45-year-old welcomed the guests, she again turned to the Oscars, saying: As we were saying, some of the really worthy winners have been overlooked.”
Speaking about the altercation, the Los Angeles Police Department said Chris declined to file a police report after the incident.
The Men In Black actor went on to win his first Oscar for his performance in King Richard and apologised on stage for his actions.
While on stage accepting his award, the star became tearful as he said: “I want to apologise to the Academy, I want to apologise to all my fellow nominees.”
He continued: “This is a beautiful moment and I'm not crying for winning an award, it's not about winning an award for me, it's about being able to shine a light on all of the people.
“Art imitates life, I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams, but love will make you do crazy things.”
After paying a beautiful tribute to his mother and other members of his family he added: “Thank you for this honour, thank you for this moment...I hope the Academy invites me back.”
