BBC respond after fans furious with delay to Sir Paul McCartney's Glastonbury set

The BBC responded after fans flooded them with complaints due to delays in airing Sir Paul McCartney's historic Glastonbury performance.

The Beatles legend took to the Pyramid Stage on the weekend with a catalogue of his timeless hits including Let It Be, Hey Jude and Live and Let Die. However, fans watching from home were upset that they couldn't watch the mesmerising performance live as BBC only added it to iPlayer an hour after it started. Others were annoyed when the chance to watch the performance back the next day was further delayed.

Many took to Twitter to share their frustration, including columnist Michael Deacon who said: "Rumours that Paul McCartney played a set at Glastonbury last night, but surely the BBC would have put it on iPlayer by now if he had." Other comments echoed the writer's thoughts, as another comment added: "The #PaulMcCartney #Glastonbury set still isn't on #bbciplayer nor does it look like it's going to be at this rate."

The BBC has now responded to the complaints. It said it was not shown live due to the “complexity” of broadcasting an event of that scale and volume.

They said: "‘This year we are delighted to bring audiences our most extensive coverage of Glastonbury to date Paul McCartney’s much anticipated set was broadcast on BBC One at 10.30pm as well as on Radio 2 and will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds. Due to the complexity of broadcasting an event of this scale and the volume of performances we cover, there is sometimes variation between performances taking place and their transmission."

At 80 years old, Sir Paul McCartney is the oldest performer to ever headline the music festival. The show included surprise appearances from Bruce Springsteen and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. As part of the encore, through special technology which could isolate Lennon's vocals from old recordings, Sir Paul was able to duet The Beatles' track I've Got A Feeling alongside his former bandmate on the Pyramid Stage.
