THE BBC has refused to release any information on why more than half a million people stopped paying their TV licence last year – claiming that publishing the files could help law-breakers evade the fees.

In July, the corporation’s annual report revealed that there were 23.3 million TV licences active by the end of the 2025/2026 financial year, a drop of 540,000 on the previous year.
