BBC radio presenter Gordon Sparks dies following battle with cancer as pals share tributes

BBC Radio presenter Gordon Sparks has died following a battle with cancer.

The 61-year-old, who presented BBC Radio Devon's breakfast show, was being treated for cancer at St Luke's Hospice in Plymouth.

His colleagues and friends paid tribute to the presenter.

Angela Kalwaites wrote on Twitter: "We will all miss our friend and colleague so much - he was definitely one-of-a-kind with a massive heart and sense of humour."

Stephanie Marshall - head of BBC South and South West - added: "It is a very sad day for BBC Radio Devon. Our hearts go out to Gordon's friends, family and faithful listeners.

"Gordon was a broadcasting legend - honest and brave through the toughest times. He will be missed dearly."

Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher added that he was an 'Argyle legend.'

"It was very emotional listening to our fans singing his name in the stands at Milton Keynes Dons yesterday," he said.

Plymouth Live's Argyle reporter Chris Errington, who worked alongside Gordon for many years, talked about his "many happy memories" with him.

"I'm proud to have been the Ernie Wise to Gordon Sparks' Eric Morecambe during our days commentating on Argyle for Radio Devon," Chris said.

The radio station paid tribute to him with special features and programming on Sunday.

RIP Sparksy was also trending on social media following his death.

Back in August, Plymouth Argyle named the press box in his honour inside Mayflower Stand.

Some fans even sang their support for him during the away game against Milton Keynes Dons.

Gordon is survived by his wife Heather, daughters Kirsty and Holly as well as his granddaughter.

On October 14, Gordon tweeted from the hospital and explained to fans how 'tired' he was.

"Huge thanks to the nurses on Brent ward at @UHP_NHS for looking after me over the last week," he wrote.

"Have moved to @StLukesPlymouth. After introduction, slept most of the afternoon. Don’t understand how tired I am. Inundated with messages. Sorry I can’t reply."
