Adele Roberts has shared the reality behind her appearance on The Great British Bake Off as she filmed the show while undergoing treatment for cancer. The BBC Radio 1 DJ was one of the latest familiar faces to step foot in the famous tent for a celebrity special of the hit Channel 4 show.
Adele, who revealed in October 2021 that she had been given a stage two bowel cancer diagnosis, told fans that she had been receiving chemotherapy treatment while taking part in the spin-off show for Stand Up To Cancer - a joint national fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.
Appearing on the special on Sunday night (April 2), Adele admitted she had still been receiving treatment while filming. The show, which was filmed last year, saw the broadcaster show off her baking skills alongside Tom Daley, David Morrissey and Lucy Beaumont.
Following the show being aired, Adele, who has since been told she is cancer free, tweeted about her time in the Bake Off tent, telling fans that she was still "on chemo during the show" and shared the reality of what that meant while she was trying to impress the judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood.
"I was actually on chemo in the tent," she typed on Twitter. "I was overheating most of the time. I had an ice machine to keep me cool." She also took to Instagram with snaps from her experience as she delivered a series of 'thank you' messages.
"Thank you so much to everyone who joined us on tonight’s Great Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off," Adele said. "Watching it back was so special. I was on chemotherapy during my time in the tent. I was overheating, delirious and very nervous! I actually don’t remember most of it. I tried my hardest not to let you down Southport. I hope I did you proud.
"Thank you to the whole Standup To Cancer team for inviting me to be on the show. It meant the world. Thank you for everything you do to help others Thank you also to Lucy, David and Tom for not only being my favourite people I’ve ever shared a tent with. But also for giving up their time to help such a great cause. You’re my actual heroes."
She added: "Thank you also to everyone who shared their story on the show tonight and everyone who took the time to watch." And while she didn't win, fans were quick to flood Adele with praise and tell her she was 'robbed' of the Star Baker title.
