BBC pundits agree as Nottingham Forest man involved in 'big' World Cup incident

The correct decision was made in sending Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey off for Wales against Iran, according to the BBC commentary team.

The Forest goalkeeper has emerged as the number one choice for Wales for the tournament, ahead of Leicester City man Danny Ward. Hennessey has started both of the nation’s opening two group stage matches.

But that will now change for the third match against England, after the goalkeeper was shown a straight red card against Iran. The shot-stopper was originally booked for a challenge outside of the area on Mehdi Taremi as the forward raced towards the Wales goal.

However, after a review at the VAR screen, the referee changed his decision and showed Hennessey a straight red. It’s a decision that both former Wales man Danny Gabbidon and BBC commentator Steve Bower agree was correct.

“You can have no complaints, neither can Robert Page, and that’s a big moment in this game now, really difficult for Wales to go on and win,” Gabbidon said on the BBC commentary. “That ball in behind has been on all game for Iran.”

Bower added: “That’s a red card, and it’s the correct decision. Doesn’t matter how Welsh you are, that’s a red card all day long.”

The numerical advantage proved to be crucial in the closing minutes of the game.

With a matter of seconds of stoppage time remaining, Rouzbeh Cheshmi struck the ball into the bottom corner of the Wales goal to grab a crucial three points in the group. Iran doubled their lead soon after through Ramin Rezaeian.

It also leaves Wales in a precarious position having picked up just one point from their opening two games.
