BBC One Sherwood: Nottingham slang, sayings and phrases that might catch viewers out

We are two episodes in and already BBC One's new drama, Sherwood, is creating a stir. Back on our screens tonight, Monday, June 20, fans are eagerly awaiting the third instalment of the fictional crime show.

Sherwood, which has been created by award-winning Nottinghamshire writer James Graham (whose previous achievements include Finding Neverland), is a six-part series inspired by real-life events in a Nottinghamshire village. The fictional story centres around two shocking and unexpected killings, a massive manhunt and historic community divisions.

Set in the county, there's obviously local interest in the series. However, last week some viewers got hot under the collar after Nottingham Forest was referred to as Notts Forest, and others picked up on the accents in the show which had fans divided over whether or not they were authentic.

Of course with the accents come some local sayings and phrases. You'll hear 'me duck' crop up a few times and there's more locally used phrases throughout the show. One viewer noted: "If you haven’t seen it yet then let me just say that Sherwood on BBC is just brilliant. Edgy, funny, political - best TV thriller since Edge of Darkness. And people say ‘me duck’ a lot!"

Some sayings are not exclusive to Nottingham or the county but if you're not familiar with them may have you pondering. For instance, "I haven't got a Scooby" says one character in the show - translation - well, it's rhyming slang meaning, "I haven't got a (Scooby doo) clue.

So, if you're struggling to make sense of the lingo so far, here are some Nottinghamshire and surrounding area sayings and phrases explained just in case they crop up in later episodes.

Duck - a term or endearment

Pigs - the police

Scooby - rhyming slang "I haven't got a ( Scooby doo) clue
