BBC Life on Mars: Where are the cast of the TV drama series now?

The first series of Life on Mars aired on the BBC 16 years ago back in January 2006.

It was set in Greater Manchester and followed a Detective Inspector called Sam Tyler, who found himself back in the 1970s after being hit by a car and ending up in a coma in his reality in 2008.

Rumours have been swirling for a while now that writers Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah have plans to bring the series back for a sequel titled Lazarus.

John Simm who played DI Sam Tyler has even teased the cast reunion on Instagram.

In January 2022, he posted a picture with co-star Philip Glenister and added the caption: "Spent a lovely afternoon with the husband, chatting about life on different planets.... #watchthisspace #lazarus"

Philip Glenister, Dean Andrews and Marshall Lancaster returned for the spin-off/sequel series Ashes to Ashes in 2008, which was set in London and saw the addition of actress Keeley Hawes as DI Alex Drake - who had found herself back in the 1980s after being shot.

But where are the cast now? What have they starred in recently and who did they play in the TV series? Here's all you need to know on the Life on Mars cast:

John Simm - DI Sam Tyler

John Simm played the leading role of the time travelling detective Sam Tyler in both the first and second series of Life on Mars.

He starred in Doctor Who between 2007 and 2017 as The Master and in 2013 worked alongside Maxine Peake in a BBC series called The Village where the pair played husband and wife.

In 2013 he reunited with his former co-star and DCI Philip Glenister in a Sky series called Mad Dogs alongside Marc Warren and Max Beesley.

They also worked together on the ITV crime thriller series Prey, which saw John win a Royal Television Society North West Award in 2015 for Best Male Performance in a Drama Series or Single Drama

In 2018 played Jonah Mulray in the Prime Video series Strangers and more recently in 2021, has appeared in the ITV crime drama film Grace as DSI Roy Grace - which was adapted from international bestselling author Peter James' novels.

Filming for the second series started in September 2021 in Brighton and Simm will reprise his role DSI Grace when the three screenplays - Not Dead Enough, Dead Man’s Footsteps and Dead Tomorrow from screenwriter and Endeavour creator, Russell Lewis - air in 2022.

Philip Glenister's role as DCI Gene Hunt in Ashes to Ashes won him an award in 2009 as Best Actor at the TV Quick Awards.

Despite being best-known for his role as the frank and forthright DCI, Philip has also been cast in numerous other productions.

Not only did he work alongside John Simm again in Prey and Mad Dogs but in 2014 starred in a mini series on the BBC titled 'From There to Here' with Life on Mars co-star Liz White.

He also starred in both series of David Walliams' BBC One sitcom Big School as Mr Gunn in 2013 and 2014 and appeared in Sky's Living The Dream as Mal Pemberton, who moved with his family to Florida from Yorkshire.

Since 2019, Philip has been voicing Betty Spud on the CITV series The Rubbish World of Dave Spud and in 2020, starred in ITV's new period dram Belgravia - from the creator of Downton Abbey Julian Fellowes - as James Trenchard.

It has not yet been confirmed if the ITV series will return for a second instalment.

Liz White - WPC/DC Annie Cartwright

Liz White has had a colourful career following her role as Annie Cartwright on Life on Mars more than a decade ago.

She has gone on to star in TV production's such as BBC's Call the Midwife - where she played Rhoda Mullucks in both series five and six of the period drama - and in Line of Duty as Jo Dwyer, the police media manager in series two.

In 2014, she appeared in a BBC series about the family who founded Chester Zoo in the 1930s, playing the mum Lizzie Mottershead.

Liz has also had roles in the films The Woman in Black and Pride.

More recently in 2017, Liz starred in ITV drama The Halcyon as receptionist of the hotel Peggy Taylor, but despite the cliffhanger end to the first instalment, ITV chose not to recommission the period drama set in the 1940s for a second series.

Also in 2017 and 2018, she could be seen playing English teacher Emma Keane in the Channel 4 drama series Ackley Bridge for two series before leaving in 2019.

In 2021, she played Fiona Grayson in the fourth series of ITV's Unforgotten.

Dean Andrews - DS Ray Carling

Since first appearing in Life on Mars in 2006 as DI Ray Carling, Dean then went on to appear in all three series of the spin-off Ashes to Ashes from 2008 to 2010.

Over the years he's starred in The Last Tango in Halifax, Silent Witness and Marchlands but is probably best known now for his role in Yorkshire soap Emmerdale playing Will Taylor, Dawn Taylor's dad.

He joined the soap as a guest star in 2019 and has since gone on to be a more permanent resident in the village, now set to marry the Emmerdale icon Kim Tate, who owns Home Farm.

In July 2020, Dean teased that the reunion for the sequel Lazarus could go ahead saying on ITV's this Morning during an interview with Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford: "There's a very, very good chance of that happening.

"The writers Matt Graham and Ashley Pharoah are in the process of writing four or five episodes, and they're getting everybody back together who wants to come back.

"I believe Phil and John are very, very excited about it, Daniel Mays, myself... they are hoping everyone wants to come back, and they want to make the story back in the 70's and the 80's and the modern day.

"I’ve just got to try and beg Emmerdale at some point in my life, if they still want me."

Marshall was part of the Life on Mars cast and then went on to reprise his role as DC Chris Skelton in the three Ashes to Ashes series which aired from 2008 to 2010.

His character found love with WPC Sharon 'Shaz' Granger played by Montserrat Lombard.

Alongside this role, he featured in the Manchester soap Coronation Street as the character Slug - making appearances between 2006 and 2009.

In 2009, he also starred in the ITV mini series Boy Meets Girl alongside the likes of Martin Freeman, Rachel Stirling and Angela Griffin.

You may also recognise him from a brief role in the 2011 series of Doctor Who where he starred alongside Matt Smith as Buzzer.

He has also had roles in Casualty and Doctors but hasn't been spotted in any acting roles since 2013 and is believed to have now set up his own plastering business and come out of the acting spotlight.

Fingers crossed he would be up for returning as DC Chris Skelton in the future!

If you've not watched the TV series before or are looking for a classic to re-watch then all episodes of series one and two of Life on Mars are on the BBC iPlayer.

The spin-off series Ashes to Ashes also has series one to three on the BBC iPlayer.
