BBC forced to apologise after technical chaos crashes Liz Truss interview twice

The BBC faced major technical difficulties during a crucial interview with Prime Minister Liz Truss on Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg.

The show was marred with technical issues as proceedings two crashed as the Prime Minister attempted to defend her tax cuts, which has wreaked havoc on the value of sterling.

BBC One’s flagship political programme blamed the technical issues on the live feed from the Conservative party conference in Birmingham, where the interview was taking place.

The broadcast feed began cutting out in the first few minutes of the show as Kuenssberg was introducing Truss.

Then during what was the PM’s first live TV interview since the mini-budget, screens glitched and went blank for more than 30 seconds, followed by the BBC news opening titles, which is usually only played at the start of programmes.

The interview broadcast finally returned as Truss was mid-sentence amid questioning on energy bills.

She said: “Making sure we're dealing with the issue of inflation, because our energy package is likely to reduce inflation by up to 5 percent.”

However, another glitch then followed as the screen went black and only the PM's voice could be heard.

She said: “But also taking action to get the economy growing, because that is –”

The broadcast then again returned to the BBC news opening titles, before Truss’s voice eventually merged with the infamous musical logo to return to screens.

She was saying: “About these problems the country is facing. If I had come on your show now and we hadn't acted on those things, we would be in serious trouble.”

At the end of the interview, Kuenssberg told viewers: “Thanks for sticking with us during some technical glitches during that interview. Apologies for that.”

The technical glitches didn't go unnoticed by viewers at home, who took to Twitter to joke the technical difficulties could be a result of foul play on the Tory government’s part.

One viewer asked: “Have rebel Tory MPs taken an axe to the line from Birmingham?” as a second chimed: “Are Truss’s SPADS try to cut the feed on Laura K’s show?”

While a third penned: “This is a car crash interview! BBC keeps cutting out, Laura cannot get a word in, Liz is completely in charge and she’s not being held accountable.”

Another wrote: “Shame to cut off the beginning of such an important interview with Liz Truss.”
